The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) is a Dyer Island Conservation Trust (DICT) project. The Dyer Island Conservation Trust was founded in 2006 and delivers unique conservation and research programmes in the fragile and critically important marine eco-system at the southern-most tip of Africa.
The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) serves as a custom-designed marine bird rehabilitation centre in the Overstrand area. We provide temporary care to diseased, displaced, injured, oiled and abandoned marine birds with special focus on the endangered African Penguin. Marine bird rescue, rehabilitation and release form part of a conservation management plan to conserve and maintain populations. Through continued research, education and awareness programmes, we aim to mitigate human impacts on marine birds.

Klipgat Cave De Kelders
Klipgat Cave although well known to many locals seems to be a well kept secret to outsiders.
This amazing historic in the Overstrand, Klipgat Cave, just outside of De Kelders in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, has a dramatic view over the ocean and the Walker Bay Reserve through its two openings. Remains found in the cave date back to between 65’000 and 85’000 years.
De Kelders is also rich in other archaeological sites, with shell middens occurring in several areas along the coast. Stanford's Cove has two important historical aspects, namely the graves of early inhabitants and the fig tree planted by the first fishermen who lived here.
The Klipgat cave is open to the public and is accessible through the Walker Bay Nature Reserve entrance at the end of De Kelders. From the Gate you will find steps going down to the cave, from there it’s a bit of a climb to get to entrance.
