Don’t miss the exciting line-up of musicians performing at this year’s festival including:
Jazz virtuoso Selaelo Selota: From mine-worker to world-class musician
A jazz concert, Memories and Songs, with internationally acclaimed jazz musician Selaelo Selota (guitar), Gally Ngoveni (bass) and Sipho Malinga (drums), is one of the exciting musical highlights of Hermanus FynArts 2104. The concert will be staged in Zwelihle (Lukhanyo Primary School Hall) on Saturday 7 June at 14:00.
Selota grew up in a rural village near Polokwane (Pietersburg). He did not have money for tertiary education, so in 1985 he found work in the gold mines. Life among migrant mine workers introduced him to the traditional songs and dances of many other Southern African tribal groups. After three years, he left the mines and went to Johannesburg.
There he worked at the Market Theatre as an usher and later as a cleaner at a jazz club, which exposed him to professional musicians. In 1988 he bought his first guitar and began studying music theory through FUBA (Federated Union of Black Artists) Academy).
In 1997 Selota graduated from UCT with a Jazz degree, majoring in Jazz Composition and Arrangement.
2014 Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz: Kyle Shepherd
A magnificent musical dialogue shared between Shepherd (piano), Shane Cooper (double base) and Jonno Sweetman (drums) has enthralled audiences across South Africa, Switzerland and China. They will perform at the Municipal Auditorium on Thursday 12 June at 19:20
Band leader, 26-year old Shepherd, is highly regarded as one of South Africa’s leading progressive Jazz pianists and composers of his generation and is steadily gaining international recognition for his distinctive compositional style and performances.

Jonno Sweetman is one of the most in-demand, orgingal sounding drummers on the music scene currently in South Africa. His sound and approach attrace attention wherever he plays and in whatever context he finds himself. He has played and recorded with top jazz artists both South African and overseas.
